A green wall is the most photographed feature in a lot of Singapore lobbies and the most likely to be quietly dying behind the receptionist. That gap, between the lush install-day photo and the patchy reality a year later, is almost always down to two things: the wrong system, or no real maintenance plan. A green wall done right is spectacular and lasts. Done cheap, it’s an expensive brown patch. Here’s how vertical gardens actually work in Singapore, what they cost in 2026, and how to keep one alive.
Why vertical greenery makes sense in a dense city
When you can’t grow outward or upward on the ground, you grow on the wall. In space-starved Singapore, vertical greenery turns blank facades, party walls and lobby features into living green and it earns its place for more than looks.
- It cools. Planting on a wall shades and insulates it, reducing heat absorption into the building.
- It fits where nothing else does narrow corridors, courtyards, lift lobbies, boundary walls.
- It transforms an ugly surface a bare party wall or a car-park facade becomes a feature.
- It counts. For commercial buildings, vertical greenery can contribute toward URA greenery requirements and draw grant funding (more on both below).
Modular vs custom living walls: which system
Not all green walls are the same product, and the choice drives both cost and how it looks in three years.
Modular systems (pre-planted panels)
Panels or trays are pre-grown and mounted to a frame. They’re faster to install, easier to swap out a failed section, and generally more forgiving a sensible choice for many commercial and residential walls. From around S$400 per square metre installed.
Custom living walls (individual planting with integrated irrigation)
Plants set into individual pockets or a growing medium with built-in irrigation, designed as one bespoke composition. This is the showpiece option richer planting, more design freedom and it costs more, from around S$800 per square metre with automated irrigation. It also demands more attentive maintenance.
The right choice depends on the wall, the look you want and honestly how the maintenance will be handled. A stunning custom wall with nobody maintaining it will fail faster than a modest modular one that gets looked after.

The truth about green wall maintenance
A vertical garden is the most demanding form of planting there is. Plants are growing sideways, in a shallow medium, entirely dependent on an irrigation system there’s no deep soil to buffer a mistake. Skip the upkeep and it shows within weeks.
- Irrigation is everything. The system must be checked and adjusted regularly; a blocked line or failed pump can brown out a section fast.
- Access matters. Higher walls need safe access for pruning, replanting and checks plan it before you build, not after.
- Replacement is normal. Even a healthy wall loses the odd plant; a maintenance plan that includes replacements keeps it looking full.
- Feeding and pruning. Confined roots need regular feeding, and pruning keeps growth even and dense.
Our honest advice: never install a green wall without a maintenance plan attached. It’s not the feature that fails it’s the assumption that it will look after itself. Budget for upkeep from day one and a green wall stays a showpiece for years.
The grant that can fund half of it
Vertical greenery is treated generously under the Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme (SGIS). For eligible existing buildings, NParks co-funds up to 50% of installation costs for vertical greenery, capped at S$500 per square metre a higher cap than rooftop greenery, reflecting that living walls cost more to build. Commercial, industrial, institutional and non-landed residential common areas can qualify.
As with all SGIS claims, you apply before installing and maintain the greenery through a five-year period. For commercial buildings, a green wall can also help meet URA’s greenery requirements. We cover both in our SGIS grant guide and our developer’s guide to LUSH (see the internal link note below), and you can confirm current terms with NParks.
What actually thrives on a Singapore green wall
Plant choice on a vertical wall is even less forgiving than on the ground, because there’s no deep soil to buffer stress and light varies sharply from top to bottom. The species that last are the tough, humidity-loving ones suited to their exact position.
- Shaded indoor and lobby walls pothos, philodendron, ferns, syngonium and peace lily handle low light and thrive in our humidity.
- Bright or semi-exposed walls spider plant, bromeliads and hardy foliage cope with stronger light.
- Outdoor and sun-hit walls tougher, sun-tolerant species and structural foliage that won’t scorch on an exposed facade.
- Texture and contrast mixing leaf shapes, sizes and shades of green is what makes a wall read as designed rather than a flat green rectangle.
Match the planting to the light at each part of the wall, not the wall as a whole the top of a tall wall often gets very different light from the base, and planting it uniformly is a common reason sections fail.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a green wall cost in Singapore?
As a 2026 guide, modular green wall systems start from around S400persquaremetreinstalled,whilecustomlivingwallswithintegratedautomatedirrigationstartfromaroundS800 per square metre. The final cost depends on the wall size, system, planting and access, so a site assessment gives the accurate figure.
What’s the difference between a modular and a custom green wall?
Modular systems use pre-planted panels mounted to a frame faster to install, easier to repair, and more forgiving. Custom living walls set plants into individual pockets or a growing medium with built-in irrigation, giving richer design freedom but costing more and needing more attentive maintenance.
Do green walls need a lot of maintenance?
Yes. A green wall is the most demanding form of planting, with shallow roots fully reliant on irrigation. It needs regular irrigation checks, feeding, pruning and occasional plant replacement. Never install one without a maintenance plan most green wall failures come from assuming it will look after itself.
Can I get a grant for a green wall in Singapore?
For eligible existing buildings, yes. The Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme co-funds up to 50% of vertical greenery installation costs, capped at S$500 per square metre. Commercial, industrial, institutional and non-landed residential common areas can qualify. You must apply before installing and maintain it for five years.
Are green walls suitable for homes as well as offices?
Yes. Green walls suit condo balconies, landed home courtyards and party walls as well as offices, lobbies and facades. For homes, a modular system is often the practical choice. The key considerations are the same everywhere: light, a reliable irrigation system, safe access and a maintenance plan.
Where to start
A green wall is one of the highest-impact things you can add to a home or building in Singapore but it rewards planning and punishes shortcuts. Choose the system that suits your wall and how it’ll be maintained, budget for upkeep from the start, and if it’s a commercial building, check whether SGIS can fund half of it. Get those right and a vertical garden stays the feature everyone photographs, not the one everyone avoids.
